Dalby Forest 2018 – Lettering the Maze

20 public workshops and individual lettering commisions over 12 months through 2018 for the Forestry Commission.

The Dry Stone Wall Maze in Dalby Forest, designed and built by Mark Ellis,  will be the largest of its kind when finished – https://drystonewallmaze.com

I was the third lettercutter to work on this project, 2 more years of workshops and commissioned initials follow in 2019 and 2020. For the commissioned initials I chose to use a letterform based on a copper plate script. These letters reminded me of graffiti I’d seen carved into rock formations and castles by visitors from centuries earlier. The fine and elegant letters were first painted and then cut into the coarse walling stone.

In the workshops, I asked the visitors to attempt to emulate the finest of all Roman letter forms – that found on the inscriptions at the base of Trajan’s Column in Rome.
